How to Protect Your Teeth During Christmas

The holiday season is here and full of various food, drinks and sweets for the whole family. It's easy to overindulge when it comes to all the tempting sweet, sugary treats that are so popular during this time of year. It's no secret that consuming too much sugar, whether in liquid or solid form, can have severe oral health consequences.

These simple tips can help you push aside your sweet tooth and get through the holidays with healthy teeth.

Continue Regular Brushing and Flossing

The rush of Christmas morning and preparing to travel to meet family can throw you off your routine and cause you to forget or skip some of your daily hygiene rituals. Don't let brushing and flossing be one of them! Maintaining good oral hygiene is an everyday task, even on a distracting day like Christmas. Consider making sure the whole family brushes before opening presents. Chances are you'll never see your children more excited to brush their teeth.

Keep Track of the Sweets You Eat

You don't have to completely cut the sweets this season, just be mindful of how much you are consuming. Moderation is something to strive for all year long, but it is especially important when so many treats are readily available.

Stay Hydrated

Taking in the proper amount of water will help prevent you from becoming hungry when your body really doesn't need any more food or sweets. Water will also help wash down any residue from sugar or salt on your foods so there is less sitting on your teeth.

Provide Options

If you are hosting the holidays, help everyone take care of their teeth by offering a variety of food options in addition to your sweets. Veggie trays and meat trays can provide a balance to the food your guests are consuming and keep bacteria from feeding off the sugars on their teeth.

Merry Christmas!

The Gasser Dental staff would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. If you find yourself in need of dental work during the holidays, our friendly staff would love to assist.
